You Are Not Alone

If you’ve been a stylist or a barber for 5-15 years, you may find yourself questioning your career choice more than once. That’s right. Inevitably, you either get stuck creatively and feel you are not learning anything, or you are learning but the routine is getting to you, or you are in the wrong salon, or you are bored, or your body is starting to talk back to you. All of those lazy habits are catching up with you.

It is a miserable cycle that will have no end, unless you start making some changes. Where to go? What to do? Choosing the cosmetologist path is not an easy one, nor for the faint of heart. You will doubt, you will think the grass is greener in another salon. You may wish your life away, beg and borrow money, maybe even lose a house, or you may not ever think it possible to own one. Even if there are successes, they may be so few that you actually consider your mom was right when she said you better go to college.

The beauty industry is full of people masquerading, keeping up appearances, because they feel they have to. But if you are in pain in any way, your joy erodes away like the earth after a hard rain. The once loved craft becomes a chore.

Maybe this will help – turn off the TV, put your cell phone away, and listen to this audio.

FEEL IT

Now take out a piece of paper and think about where you are right now. Are you happy? Are you content? Are you making enough money? Are you overweight? Do you have back pain? List everything you feel needs to change in your life, including health issues, relationships, personality quirks, your salon, your business, your clients, your financial situation.

“At its core, problem solving is a methodical four-step process. You may even recall these steps from when you were first introduced to the Scientific Method.

  1. First, you must define the problem. What is its cause? What are the signs there’s a problem at all?
  2. Next, you identify various options for solutions. What are some good ideas to solve this?
  3. Then, evaluate your options and choose from among them. What is the best option to solve the problem? What is the easiest option? How should you prioritize?
  4. Finally, implement the chosen solution. Does it solve the problem? Is there another option you need to try?”

LIST IT

On a new page:

List what you want by the end of this month, next month, the end of the year, next year, three years, five years and ten years. Be honest and dream wildly. No holds barred. When you play small, you get small.

Now play this and close your eyes.

DREAM IT

“How to Use Visualization to Heal Physically and Emotionally by Joelle Klein is a simple guide to the power of this easy technique that you can use in your everyday life.

“Visualization (also called guided imagery or creative visualization) is the technique of focusing your imagination on behaviors or events you’d like to have occur in your life. Advocates suggest creating a detailed schema of what one desires and then visualizing it over and over again, using all of your senses. What do you see? What do you feel? What do you hear? What does it smell like?”

This very powerful tool is at our fingertips and costs nothing, and it is not to be underestimated. Use it and see how your life can change, from the most incremental to the monumental. Give it to yourself.
