The beauty industry is competitive and burnouts are frequent. It is difficult for many of us to remember to take care of ourselves amidst the glamorous chaos. Don’t let your lucrative career as a hairstylist or barber fall through the cracks! Many of us have reached a crossroads in our careers where we feel we have had to decide between ourselves or our business. When you reach this point, it’s best to talk to a professional – either a licensed therapist or another veteran beauty guru – who can help you. In the meantime, here are a few tips to keep up your self-care in tumultuous times.
Schedule time for yourself just like you would a client – Emergency appointments, new techniques, and fussy customers can leave the best of us frazzled. Make sure you get the solid 8 hours of sleep, eat clean, and take care of your body. Treat yourself to a foot soak (working on your feet all day can wear out muscles quickly) and remember to pamper yourself. Make yourself an appointment so you don’t forget and savor your personal time.

Learn new skills and techniques whenever you can – A common reason many cite for quitting the beauty industry is boredom. Luckily, we live in an age where new information is right at our fingertips. There are so many sources for tutorials online where fellow beauty professionals share their passion and skills. Alternatively, taking additional classes, whether it be beauty-related or the management side of the business, can enliven an old spark and get you back on your A game in no time!
Seek help when you need it – and don’t be ashamed to ask. As mentioned before, the beauty industry can be tough work. Many beauty professionals don’t get the recognition they deserve and work exhausting hours to hone their craft. On top of that, we have our personal lives to balance with our busy schedules. There is no shame in asking for help when you need it, whether it be from a family member or licensed therapist. Remember that your best work is done when you’re at your best!
