Revelations Are Just The Beginning
Have you ever asked the question, “How long will I be able to stay in this business?” Or, “How am I ever going to make a living in this industry I love so much?” Maybe you even notice resentment is starting to build up, or your body is in so much pain you have to self-medicate to get through your day. Through my observations and experience as a stylist, salon owner, and educator, I’ve noticed in the industry that hairdressers are the most empathic group of people, but along with that is a great deal of silent suffering.
Do Your Homework
Landing a job in this market, with so many hairstylists out there, may seem a daunting task to even think about finding the right salon for you. Fortunately, the beauty industry is growing at such a rapid rate – more than a lot of industries – and the population is growing, so more hairstylists will be needed. Don’t be fooled, however. There may be salons you don’t want to work in, which leaves a more competitive market for the good salons. Sometimes these salons even go to the schools to hand-pick the best students. You want to do everything in your power to represent yourself well. Let’s face it, you may have gone to a good school (or not) but you need the experience to grow, and you need the right environment in which to thrive. So do your homework!

When you think of craft in America, you think of knitting, ceramics, or making furniture. These artists reap many health, psychological, and personal benefits from creating a quilt, a vase or a chair. With the advent of the Maker movement, technology, hand made items, and artistry, another important resurgence of craft has emerged. As hairstylists, your cosmetology career can soar with the benefits of the Maker, because you are one. Let’s talk about these benefits in depth.
GROW YOUR SALON NOW
Education equals freedom, we’ve talked about it before. Some of us learn visually, some of us learn by listening, and some of us learn by doing. There is a way in which education has become an elite proposition for salons and hairdressers that can sell product in exchange for education. We all need to inspire each other, we are all capable of bringing up another and free education is readily available through online education. The industry leaders below realize there is a whole host of hairstylists missing out on education, who have a thirst for learning more and need easy access education. The list contains five excellent podcasts that will inspire your business strategies, whether you are an independent within a salon, an employee, or a salon owner. These digital learning hubs are full of great social media lessons, customer service recommendations, business strategies, advice and shared experiences.
Time to Detox
Yep! That is what we will be doing together, should you choose to take the leap of faith. Why? The article in Time Magazine on December 15, 2015, titled “Americans Check Their Phones 8 Billion Times a Day,” by Lisa Eadicicco, states that the “average person looks at his, her, or their phone 46 times every day.” How about you? If you are a beauty professional, you are more than likely on the phone or iPad more times than that. Most of us make our appointments, do our banking, email, text, browse online, all at the same time. Your husbands, wives, kids, or friends have told you your obsession with technology is over the top, and driving them crazy, or you both are in it together.
